Special School District proudly announces the election of Mrs. Carmen Stayton as the new President of the Board of Education, marking a historic milestone as the first person of color to hold the position. Stayton, who has served as the Board Director for Subdistrict 1—representing Hazelwood, Jennings, and Maplewood-Richmond Heights school districts—brings a wealth of experience as an educator, nonprofit leader, and advocate for students and families.
The SSD Board of Education has announced an opportunity to serve students, staff, and the community via an open seat. Candidate filing for Subdistrict 4—which represents the Ferguson-Florissant, Pattonville, and Riverview Gardens school districts - runs until 4 PM on April 4, 2025.
During the March 11 Board of Education meeting, Jenna Heinlein was approved as the new principal of Ackerman School in the Special School District of St. Louis County.
Ackerman School paid a special tribute to Black sitcoms during its annual Black History Month celebration.
The SSD Strategic Plan established three key priorities: Systems, Resources, and Relational Communications. Each priority includes defined goals, strategies for achieving them, and dedicated teams of SSD staff working collaboratively to implement these strategies. This month, we spotlight the work of Strategy Team 3.3.
Students ignited their minds and let their creativity shine bright when The Magic House visited Ackerman School and brought STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) themed activities for students and their families to explore.
As SSD celebrates Black History Month, we honor the remarkable contributions and achievements of Black Americans who have paved the way in education, leadership, and innovation. Their resilience and brilliance have shaped history, and their legacy continues to inspire progress and creativity today.
The Governing Council will consider an applicant for an open position on the SSD Board of Education during the March 3 meeting. SSD had two open positions: Subdistrict 3 and Subdistrict 4.
